Auburn makes Jonathan Kuminga’s top five

Jonathan Kuminga, the consensus No.1 recruit in the class of 2021, released his top five May 22, consisting of Auburn, Texas Tech, Duke, Kentucky and the G League.

Listed at 6’8″ and 205 lb by 247 Sports, Kuminga is a versatile and skilled player for his size and is also seen as a likely reclassification candidate.

Kuminga has been an Auburn target for a long time, after Bruce Pearl and the Tigers were the first major school to offer the top ranked forward.

Since then, Kuminga has visited Auburn and been visited by Auburn coaches multiple times.

Kuminga has a brother at Texas Tech, which seems to drive the speculation that the Red Raiders leads the race. However, Kuminga and his circle have kept their recruitment process quiet in recent months, and it might be worth noting that Auburn seems to have connections to Kuminga outside of the current coaching staff.

JT Thor‘s relationship with Kuminga isn’t the only connection Auburn seems to have.

In January, Sharife Cooper‘s dad (Omar Cooper Sr., who now operates LifeStyle Sports Agency after coaching Isaac Okoro, Babatunde Akingbola, Devan Cambridge, Dylan Cardwell, Cooper and others on the Athletes of Tomorrow AAU team) set up a a high school basketball event called the OSC Give Back Classic in the Coopers’ home state of New Jersey. Sharife Cooper’s McEachern team played Kuminga’s The Patrick School team, but Kuminga was recovering from a small injury when the game was played.

While that doesn’t amount to having his brother on the team, it might be worth something if Auburn stays in the race.

Based on what I’ve seen from Kuminga, he can do a bit of everything, but his best work comes in transition. Kuminga runs the floor extremely well for his size and draws a lot of attention when doing so. He is a skilled passer, dunker and scorer, and has multiple tools for beating defenders.

Kuminga is also a versatile defender thanks to his athleticism and size, and he pins shots to the backboard and swats some into the stands throughout his highlight reels.
